What to Look for When Buying a Used Pickup Truck

The Complete Used Truck Inspection Guide

Buying a used pickup truck is a significant investment, especially when you need it to handle Northern Minnesota conditions. Here's exactly what to inspect before you buy.

Under the Hood

Engine Inspection:

  • Check oil condition (should be clean, not milky or gritty)
  • Look for oil leaks around gaskets and seals
  • Inspect belts and hoses for cracks
  • Check coolant condition and level
  • Look for any signs of overheating

  • Battery and Electrical:

  • Test battery (especially important for Minnesota winters)
  • Check for corrosion on terminals
  • Verify all lights work (headlights, signals, brake lights)

  • The Frame and Undercarriage

This is CRITICAL for trucks in Bemidji:

  • Check for rust: Minnesota road salt eats frames. Look carefully at frame rails, cross members, and leaf spring mounts
  • Inspect the bed: Look under the bed liner for rust
  • Exhaust system: Check for holes or excessive rust
  • Fuel and brake lines: Should be intact, not corroded

  • Drivetrain

    For 4x4 Trucks:

  • Engage 4WD and listen for grinding or clicking
  • Test 4-High and 4-Low
  • Check transfer case fluid level and condition
  • Inspect front axle and CV joints

  • Transmission:

  • Automatic: Fluid should be red/pink, not brown or burnt-smelling
  • Check for smooth shifting through all gears
  • Test towing mode if equipped

  • Body and Bed

    Rust Check Points:

  • Wheel wells (common rust area)
  • Cab corners
  • Rocker panels
  • Tailgate
  • Around windshield

  • Bed Inspection:

  • Does it have a bed liner?
  • Check for dents and damage
  • Inspect tie-down points
  • Test tailgate operation

  • Interior

  • Heat test: Run the heater on full (crucial for Bemidji winters)
  • Seat condition: Especially driver's seat wear
  • Gauge cluster: All gauges should work
  • 4WD controls: Test selector switch or lever

  • Test Drive

    Take a thorough test drive:

  • Highway driving (test engine and transmission under load)
  • City driving (test brakes and steering)
  • Rough road if possible (listen for suspension noises)
  • Test 4WD engagement while moving slowly

  • Documentation to Request

  • Vehicle history report (CARFAX)
  • Maintenance records
  • Any modification history
  • Previous inspection reports
